It’s likely to be seven months before the iPhone 15’s official unveiling, but in the meantime there are plenty of leaks and rumors to digest – including one that hints at a “new camera” for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
This is from a typist ShrimpApplePro (opens in a new tab) (By GSMArena (opens in a new tab)) on Twitter. The claim was made in response to the listing of leaked iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus specs that had been circulating up until that point.
There are no other details though – so it’s unclear exactly how the camera hit on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus successors will be different. Presumably some redesign will come into play.
Add a pinch of salt
It is worth noting that the mention of the new camera is preceded by the sentence “don’t quote me on this, but” – suggesting that this may not be the most reliable rumor in terms of information quality or certainty it will happen.
That said, ShrimpApplePro is not new to the phone leak game. While we have had some inaccurate information from this source in the past, there have also been some correct predictions. These correct predictions include the battery size of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
At this stage, it can definitely be a redesigned camera bump for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. I wonder if we’ll hear more rumors about it between now and September.
Analysis: let the speculation begin
In terms of appearance, the camera bump on the back of the iPhone 14 is identical to that of the iPhone 13, which in turn is only a slight variation (in terms of lens positioning) from the one we got from the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11.
So it’s fair to say we haven’t seen a significant iPhone camera overhaul since 2019, which is pretty far-fetched. This makes us more likely to believe that this is an accurate leak and that Apple really intends to make changes this year.
Speculation has already begun on Twitter about what the “new camera” hint might mean. Perhaps additional lenses will be added in addition to the two 12 MP modules in the current model, or maybe the convexity will become larger or more pronounced.
Apple could even follow the Samsung Galaxy S23’s lead and separate the camera lenses on the back of the phone, with no visible housing around them. So far, we haven’t seen any leaked photos of the iPhone 15.
