The Nvidia RTX 4070 doesn’t get as much attention or hype as Nvidia’s next-gen flagship card, the Nvidia RTX 4090, but it’s arguably the most important card in the entire Nvidia Lovelace launch lineup.
Although the Nvidia GTC 2022 event took place on September 20, there was no news about the mid-range GPU, especially since the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3070 is – in our expert opinion – could be one of the best graphics cards on the market for most people other than Nvidia RTX GeForce 3060 Ti.
And given the many rumors we’ve heard about the RTX 4070, we’re expecting an extremely powerful graphics card, perhaps even more powerful than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080.
The Nvidia RTX 4090 is now available alongside the Nvidia RTX 4080 – although the 12GB version of this card was rushed out and is expected to return with a more appropriate name: the RTX 4070 Ti.
This is all rumor and speculation at this point though, so it remains to be seen how this card compares to the best Nvidia GeForce graphics cards on the market, but there are plenty of things we’ve heard that this is the one graphics card we’re most interested in in the coming weeks and months.
Nvidia RTX 4070: Get to the point
- What is this? The new generation “mid-range” graphics card from Nvidia.
- When will it be available? It may start as early as January 2023
- How much does it cost? Considering inflation, probably slightly higher than the RTX 3070
Nvidia RTX 4070: release date
Most of the upcoming Lovelace graphics cards, with the exception of the already available GeForce RTX 4090 and 4080, may be launch in January 2023.
It was previously thought that the GeForce RTX 4070 would premiere in mid-November 2022. gossip with Kopite7kimi 4,090 fired in July or August. But more recent leaks have pointed to January 5 as a possible release date for the RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti – something that would fit well with Nvidia’s planned January 3 show event at CES 2023.
Nvidia RTX 4070: Price
With the RTX 4090’s ridiculous starting price of $1,599 and the RTX 4080 at a still pricey $1,199, how much the RTX 4070 will cost is anyone’s guess. Considering the canceled RTX 4080 12GB was originally supposed to launch for $899, we can at least say it will be cheaper than that, but almost certainly more expensive than the previous generation RTX 3070.
The main and most obvious reason would be the increased specs of the 4070 which calls for a higher price tag. Global inflation also plays an important role here.
The RTX 4070 Ti may not hold the price of the card it used to be, but we’d be surprised if it drops below $799 – meaning we can probably expect a price for this RTX 4070 somewhere in the $599-$699 range, unless Nvidia decides to go generic price drop to fight AMD’s highly competitive pricing for the new Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
Nvidia RTX 4070: Specifications
Thanks to a recent leak, we now have a concrete idea of what the specs of the RTX 4070 will look like (although keep in mind that these details should be taken with a grain of salt as they have yet to be officially confirmed by Nvidia).
The RTX 4070 is supposed to use the same AD104 GPU matrix as the RTX 4070 Ti (and the former 12GB RTX 4080), but it will be a slightly stripped-down version of the GPU found in this card. If the leak is true, the RTX 4070 will feature 5,888 CUDA cores, 184 tensor cores, and 46 stream multiprocessors.
The downsized AD104 chip will have the same 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM at 21Gbps, as well as the same 192-bit memory bus and 504GB/s bandwidth – although the L2 cache is slightly smaller at 36MB. The boost clock should be the same though, sitting at a decent 2610MHz. Thankfully, this card is predicted to have a TDP of 250W – a nice change from the monstrously power-hungry flagship cards we’re currently seeing.
