Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti is the latest Lovelace GPU to be the subject of a leak regarding its purported specs, as rumors about the RTX 4000 range continue to pop up thick and fast.
This speculation comes from Kopite7kimi, a Twitter hardware leak regular, and goes into quite a bit of detail (hat cap to VideoCardz (opens in a new tab) for detecting a tweet).
The RTX 4060 Ti has a very short reference board. The PG190 still uses the CEM5 connector. AD106-350-A14352FP328G 18Gbps GDDR632M L2220WDecember 13, 2022
Go for it with lots of spice in hand, but as you can see the GPU used is AD106 (apparently AD106-350-A1 to be exact) and the number of CUDA cores is 4352, alongside 8GB of GDDR6 video memory (at 18Gb/ s). TGP is set to 220W.
As VideoCardz points out, previous leaks have suggested that the AD106 GPU will run with a 128-bit memory bus, which would theoretically give the RTX 4060 Ti 288GB/s bandwidth.
We were also told that the RTX 4060 Ti has a “very short” reference board.
Analysis: Still a long way to go for this GPU
The purported specification shown here caused disappointment as a general reaction on the internet.
Of course, we should be skeptical of any spec rumors – and we should remember that as far as we know, this is still an early development phase for the RTX 4060 Ti, so even if true, the specs listed here are still subject to change by Nvidia.
The sheer number of CUDA cores drew some moans, but we can’t judge the card’s power based solely on this spec. Yes, it actually has fewer cores than the RTX 3060 Ti (which has 4864) according to this leak, but generational architecture improvements should be considered as well as all other GPU specs.
The point of contention for many is the use of 8GB of VRAM and the rather modest-looking theoretical memory bandwidth, which could be an unfortunate combination – although the greatly increased L2 cache, 32MB, could be a helpful boost compared to the 3060 Ti which had 4MB. Moreover, we should add more salt here as the bandwidth calculations are based on the previous rumored spec, which makes things more shaky.
In any case, gamers were already dissatisfied with the 3060 Ti using 8GB, let alone the more powerful 4060 Ti. But whatever the case, broad expectations are for a graphics card equal to the RTX 3070 Ti – and a lot will then depend on the price. Which, given the current form of Nvidia, does not make us optimistic.
First of all, we should keep in mind that all of these specs are subject to change depending on the reaction to the RTX 4070 Ti and 4070, and of course how things go with the mid-range RDNA 3 GPUs. It’ll also probably be a long time before the RTX 4060 Ti arrives – certainly the rumor mill doesn’t believe the RTX 4060 will arrive until mid-2023 – and Nvidia still has quite a bit of stock of the RTX 3000 to clear, as we all know, no doubt quite a bit of that in the mid-range.
So, given the long timeframe of the likely appearance of the RTX 4060 Ti and 4060, even if these are specs on the board at the moment, we’d be surprised if they didn’t change at all over time based on the aforementioned factors and the changing GPU landscape.
